The unexpected passing of 42-year-old Camillus resident Chad M. Ames is a blow to both environmentalism and the community it serves. Tuesday just gone he was cut off in mid-career, leaving more than just an empty pilot light in Elmira-born Chad’s heart. From that fine start at Elmira and residency in Camillus since 2011, Chad took his lumps all the way to earn success through studies, efforts in the public eye, and how he touched and reached hearts here and there professionally.

Educational and Professional Achievements

Chad M. Ames achieved a rare and thankworthy academic path, beginning in 1999 when he finished at Troy High School. He continued to earn a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from King’s College, a Master’s degree in Environmental Protection and Safety Management from St. Joseph’s University, and executive MPA from Syracuse University. A United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employee during his career, Chad held positions at such places as Syracuse University and drew salaries from them afterwards; he also spent the final years of his working life “at Baxter” as a Senior Specialist. He has been as avid in sharing the learning as receiving it, becoming a lecturer with his specialty being environmental management at SUNY ESF.

Impact on the Community

Outside of his work area, Chad Ames will be remembered in two ways by the Camillus community. His six-year service with the Fairmount Fire Department, following on from honorary membership for years made a point public spirit is crucial. As a coach, board member and then commissioner for both Camillus Softball & Baseball Assoc. Chad deeply impacted young lives. His influence also extended to his children, instilling the values of sharing, sacrifice and dedication in them.

Chad is survived by his loving wife Sarah, who he was married to for 13 years, and his three children drew inspiration from their father’s wisdom: Abigail, Adam and Evelyn. He also leaves precious memories behind for his parents as well as his loving spouse complete with offspring, Donald and Cheri (Bill) Thomas; siblings include Carsyn (Zach), Jamie, and Jackie Ames; family and friends who will miss his enjoyment of sports, music in the cultural interlude, holidaying together.

Celebrating Chad’s Life

Friends and family can celebrate the extraordinary life of Chad Ames by calling at St. Joseph’s Church in Camillus, on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024 from 4:00 p.m.-7 pm. A funeral mass will be held at the same location on the following day at 10:30 a.m., with Chad to be buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Warners. Instead of flowers memorial gifts should go to Chad Ames Scholarship Fund, a fund that will help support young athletes in his name but continue into their futures.
